When your child is young, it is crucial to take time at home to help improve his or her writing skills. Perhaps while you are encouraging education over winter break you can consider implementing some of these writing techniques with your child. The Tutoring Center in Powder Springs would like to help you by providing five tips.

Read Together

Before your child will develop a desire or love for writing, he or she is going to need to be familiar with some good examples. An excellent way to provide a model is by reading with your child. Depending on your child’s interests, remember that you are not limited to fiction. If your child has taken a special interest in rockets or dinosaurs, you can read non-fiction material on those subjects. This way your child is exposed to expository writing as well.

Use Games

Not only are these games fun, but they will also help your child to improve spelling and vocabulary. You can use games like ‘Mad Libs’ where your child is able to practice grammar, reading comprehension, and creativity. Not to mention, this activity can be fun for the whole family.

Write Together

Likewise, writing with your child is an excellent option. You can brainstorm together, come up with a topic, and perhaps even take turns writing sentences in a story. You may also research something together and write a non-fiction informative book to other kids, to educate them on what you’ve learned together.

Designate Time

It’s important to make time for writing endeavours during the day. With extra-curricular activities and homework, it may not be possible to make time for writing every day, but be sure to add it to the schedule at least twice a week.

Provide Help

While you should not write for your child, you should encourage your child and help when he or she is stuck on sentence structure or how to spell a word. You can certainly encourage your child to use a dictionary, but provide help when you can.

Remember that if your child is enjoying these new writing activities, but needs some more assistance outside of the home, The Tutoring Center is here to help. For tutoring in Powder Springs, contact us at (770) 222-7133.
