Learning how to spell properly isn’t just a matter of knowing how to write. It has to do with having a better knowledge of your culture, being able to make yourself understood more effectively, and becoming a better reader, writer, and a more competitive suitor in the business world.

This is why, if you notice that your child is struggling with spelling, you should try your best to help them improve. If you’d like a few tips on how you can achieve this, keep on reading this post!

How to Help Your Child Improve their Spelling

  1. There is no better activity to improve spelling than reading. Encourage your child to read books by great authors that master the language so they can learn from them.
  2. Another great way to help your child polish their spelling skills, is to motivate them to write. As they say, “practice makes perfect”, and writing will give your child the opportunity work on their skills.
  3. With spelling, as well as with other skills, there are some rules that need to be followed. Make sure your child understands them, and knows them (and their exceptions) well (e.g. drop the “e” on words that end on silent “e” before adding “ing” - move, moving).
  4. Memory plays a big part in spelling as well. Help your child become a better speller by using mnemonic devices, for example, creating a song or rhyme, so they can memorize the spelling of a word or the rules.
  5. You should also pay special attention to the words your child struggles with. Encourage them to repeat them until they get them right on their own, and to remember their spelling for similar words.
  6. A dictionary can be a great tool to improve spelling. Your child should use one to look up words they’re unfamiliar with. They can even create a spelling log for those new words.
  7. Your child’s senses can also help with spelling. Often times, by saying a word out loud, and listening to the sound you make, can help you get a better idea of how it is spelled.
  8. Lastly, not everything has to be about studying and memorizing. There are some games out there (and apps) that can help your child practice their spelling and ultimately become better at it.
