How to Write an Effective Essay

If your child is intimidated by an upcoming essay, help them prepare with these tips.

Pay Attention to the Topic

All essays revolve around one topic. You will either be assigned a topic or you will get to choose one to write about. If you get to choose yours, stick to something you enjoy so that the essay writing process is more enjoyable. If your essay will be answering a question, be sure that you stick to answering that question. This may sound like an easy task, but you'd be surprised to find how many students veer off track and don't answer the question at hand. You will also need to decide what type of essay you're writing. For example, will it be persuasive or informative?

Get Organized

Once you have your basic ideas down, it's time to get them organized. The best way to do this is by writing down your ideas on paper and putting them in order. Using an outline is a great way to sort everything out and give your essay a backbone. Remember that your essay should have three basic sections: the introduction, the body paragraphs, and the conclusion. The introduction should grab the readers' attention and state your thesis. The body paragraphs should each present a main idea that supports your thesis. These should also include supporting evidence for each main idea. Your conclusion should bring your essay to a close while reinforcing your thesis. Use an outline to organize these in an order that makes sense and strengthens your essay.

Review Your Work

Once you've completed your essay, the work isn't done. Reread your essay and look for corrections or opportunities to strengthen your writing. Once you're satisfied, ask someone to read it, make corrections, and give you their opinion. Make the necessary changes and corrections to complete your final and best draft of your essay.
